MNS Urges Congress to Fully Fund CNCS
As part of the national campaign to Save Service in America, the Center for Music National Service is urging federal representatives in Washington D.C. to support full funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that oversees programs such as AmeriCorps and Senior Corps, engaging Americans in service. Along with many government-funded programs, national and community service programs such as AmeriCorps*VISTA (which funds the majority of MNS's HQ manpower, and has been essential to our growth as an organization) is at risk of being defunded or significantly reduced in funding. Additionally, as a current national planning grantee, AmeriCorps is key to the multi-state expansion of MNS's flagship program, MusicianCorps.
On September 15, MNS CEO and Founder, Kiff Gallagher sent a letter to each of the 12 members of the bipartisan "super committee" charged with reducing the federal deficit, urging them to support fully funding CNCS. Click here to read a copy of the letter.
MNS encourages its supporters to also engage their elected officials by asking them to protect opportunities for Americans to serve. Resources and talking points are available at www.saveservice.org.
UPDATE 10/3/11: House Puts Service at Risk
Update from Save Service Campaign Director AnnMaura Connolly: "The Save Service Coalition learned that the House of Representatives has issued draft legislation to shut down the Corporation for National and Community Service and eliminate funding for AmeriCorps, the Social Innovation Fund, the Volunteer Generation Fund and Learn & Serve America. While we are pleased that the House bill includes funding for the National Senior Volunteer Programs, the bill dissolves the entire service enterprise, cuts over 100,000 jobs, and eliminates essential services that children, seniors, veterans and entire communities rely on."
Your calls, emails, letters, and outreach to representatives are still needed!
