With funding from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the AmeriCorps*VISTA program The Center for Music National Service opened its headquarters in San Francisco and launched a national MusicianCorps pilot in San Francisco, Oakland, Seattle, Chicago, and New Orleans. Partnering with the Ruth U. Fertel Foundation in New Orleans, Arts Corps in Seattle and Urban Gateways in Chicago, MNS provided national training, program support, technical assistance, promotion and outreach, documentation and evaluation for the pilot year. 

 

     

 

MusicianCorps Mentors

20 Music Service Artists – certified teachers and therapists, teaching artists and youth and development experts of all ages – delivered quality music instruction and service experiences to thousands of underserved youth in the following settings:

  • 26 public schools
  • 7 youth centers
  • 2 public housing communities
  • 4 healthcare institutions
  • 10 community based organizations

Outcomes

MusicianCorps empowered 3,600 youth with ongoing music instruction and music-making opportunities. Over 7,000 community members were reached through 175 public events and the creation of 62 recording projects and bands.

National Impact data demonstrates success of the MusicianCorps National Pilot in engaging youth and strengthening communities:

  • Sixty-three percent (63%) of youth agreed, “Because of MusicianCorps, I want to come to school more.”  
  • Nearly seven in ten MusicianCorps youth (66%) are more interested in helping out in their community than before, and six in ten (64%) report that they understand other people better at the conclusion of MusicianCorps.
  • Over 70% of site partners agreed youth were more creative after MusicianCorps. Six in ten site partners agreed youth were more persistent in the face of challenges, more disciplined, worked better in teams and had improved critical thinking skills.
  • Ninety-five percent (95%) of partner sites agreed that MusicianCorps is a high-quality program.
  • Nationally, 86% of site partners reported MusicianCorps would be invited back this year. In the Bay Area, 100% of site partners stated they would invite MusicianCorps back.
