Throughout December, MusicianCorps students shared their work with peers, teachers, parents and other community members. In Oakland, students from Think College Now Elementary took part in Unity Night by performing “De Colores” in both English and Spanish to celebrate the rich diversity of their school and surrounding neighborhood.
At MetWest High School in Oakland, MusicianCorps students performed their own rap songs the school’s weekly Town Hall Meeting. The students not only wrote the lyrics themselves, but also composed the beats, and musical backgrounds to the songs.
Across the bay, students at Horace Mann Middle School displayed their chops to other students and community members at their Afterschool Showcase. Check out MusicianCorps student Amaranta’s delivery of the soul classic “Stand By Me”:
Finally, MC Fellows continued to “deck the halls” of the UCSF Children’s Hospital with music in December. With the themes of community and camaraderie, MC Fellows took song requests while patients played and sang along. For those patients unable to participate in communal areas, a pair of MC Fellows made bedside musical rounds. Click here to read MC Fellow Meagan Hughes’ account of the day of festivities.
