Policy & Advocacy

Center for Music National Service is committed to providing leadership that sustains and expands the role of music as a strategy for public good, and creates opportunities for musicians to serve. MNS's movement-building efforts include advocating to public leaders, generating policy proposals, and hosting public education programs on the value of music.  

HIGHLIGHTS

With leadership from Congressman Joseph Crowley (NY) and George Miller (CA) in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senators Jeanne Shaheen (NH), Barbara Mikulski (MD) and Judd Gregg (NH) in the Senate, MNS and its supporters successfully advocated for musicians and artists to be included in the Serve America Act.

MNS thanks the bipartisan Congressional Musicians Caucus, created with support from MNS, for their promotion of “innovative policy strategies that incorporate music in the fields of education, health and social policy as well as the use of music for increased civic engagement, volunteerism, diplomacy and peace.”

MNS hosts periodic Music Tanks” – multi-disciplinary gatherings of leaders to discuss impact strategies and best practices in music and arts-driven service.  

MNS also holds one-time special events for public education, advocacy and leadership development, such as a National Leadership Roundtable at the Aspen Institute, a Policy Briefing and Performance by MNS supporters including Former Governor Mike Huckabee (AR) and Representative Joseph Crowley (NY) at the Center for American Progress and an Artist Corps Informance with members of congress at the Kennedy Center.
